David De Gea has once again been Manchester United’s stand-out performer, but with the Spaniard’s contract set to expire in 16 months, and fervent reports of interest from Real Madrid, Red Devils’ supporters would be forgiven for worrying about his future at the club. While there have been suggestions that an extension is progressing towards being agreed, questions have popped up as to why United have allowed their star’s future to reach such a point.Naturally, these scenarios are never entirely clear-cut, with a number of issues influencing the situation.Above are just some of reasons believed to be contributing to De Gea’s stalled contract. 5 5. Guarantee of Champions League football and a title challenge – Upon arriving at Old Trafford, De Gea was thrust into the spotlight and a major part of a side regularly challenging for honours on all fronts, but that came crashing down following Sir Alex Fergusons decision to retire. While De Gea has knuckled down and shown that he wants to drag the fallen giants back into the big time, the longer Man United continue to struggle in scraps for fourth place the more he will consider moving to somewhere he can chase trophies. 5 2. Lack of praise for his efforts – Click the arrow for more reasons – Very much a by-product of reason number one, Van Gaals tendency to not be very forthcoming with praise for the Spaniard looks to have had a negative effect on their already fractured relationship. De Gea has undoubtedly been Uniteds best performer, but when recently asked whether he had saved the Red Devils points this season, Van Gaal said: I think he doesn’t save many points because he’s my goalkeeper. His obligation is to hold balls and you are thinking that is an exception for other goalkeepers and it’s not. 5 5 5 1. A frosty relationship with Louis van Gaal – Click the arrow for more reasons – According to widespread reports, De Gea and boss Louis van Gaal havent spoken for months, causing their relationship to sour. Part of it is down to the Dutchmans apparent stand-off approach when it comes to his players something that doesnt sit well with a few of his stars, including De Gea. 3. Contract buy-out clause – Click the arrow for more reasons – Reportedly one of the biggest sticking points in the negotiations over a new contract has been the issue of a buy-out clause. With Real Madrid monitoring the situation closely, United are believed to be keen on inserting a massive buy-out clause in order to dissuade them from making a move this summer. The players representatives arent so keen though and are demanding that any such clause be limited to £25m. 4. Opportunity to become Real Madrid and Spain number one – Click the arrow for more – De Gea may be playing at his highest ever level and experiencing the sort of adulation he never had at Atletico, but for a large amount of Iberian and Latin American players, there is no greater allure than playing for Real Madrid. Despite his affiliations for their city rivals, its almost impossible to play down just how big a deal it is to play for Los Blancos. Throw into the mix the opportunity to replace Iker Casillas at both club and international level and that would be hard for most goalkeepers to turn down.
