LEADING OFF: Deadline deals, Pineda returns, Rays roll Yanks

first_img First Published: 1st September, 2020 09:25 IST WATCH US LIVE Written By A look at what’s happening around the majors Tuesday:___FACES IN NEW PLACESMike Clevinger, Starling Marte and Archie Bradley are among the notable players headed to new teams after a flurry of deals before Monday’s trade deadline. The busy and aggressive Padres landed Clevinger in a multiplayer swap with Cleveland, bolstering their rotation in a rare deadline deal between contenders. It was San Diego’s fifth big trade since Saturday, and the cost was a package of young players that included outfielder Josh Naylor, right-hander Cal Quantrill and catcher Austin Hedges. The surprising Marlins reeled in Marte for their outfield, and the Reds boosted their bullpen by acquiring Bradley from Arizona. The trade deadline is normally July 31, but it was pushed back when the start of the season was delayed because of the coronavirus.“I’d say the volume of consummated transactions probably surprised me a little bit,” Brewers general manager David Stearns said.BIG MIKE IS BACKMichael Pineda comes off the restricted list to make his season debut for Minnesota. The 6-foot-7, 280-pound righty is scheduled to start against the Chicago White Sox after completing his 60-game suspension for testing positive for a weight-loss drug on baseball’s banned substances list. Pineda came into the year with 36 games remaining on his punishment after he was sidelined on Sept. 7, 2019, with the Twins on their way to an AL Central title. He was ineligible for the postseason. The 31-year-old Pineda went 11-5 with a 4.01 ERA, 28 walks and 140 strikeouts in 146 innings over 26 starts in 2019, coming off Tommy John surgery that kept him out in 2018.RAYS UPAfter a decade spent chasing big-budget AL East rivals, the Tampa Bay Rays are pummeling the New York Yankees. The Rays are 4½ games up in the division on the Bronx Bombers after winning Monday night at Yankee Stadium to improve to 7-1 against New York this season. After Tyler Glasnow outshined Gerrit Cole in the series opener, the Rays plan to run a bullpen game against Masahiro Tanaka, with Charlie Morton expected to come off the injured list and pitch for Tampa Bay in the series finale Wednesday.HOT AT THE PLATESeveral hitters in the Nationals-Phillies series are on a serious roll. Washington slugger Juan Soto has 11 homers in just 24 games played this season after going deep twice Monday night. Nationals teammate Trea Turner is the first player in franchise history to have at least three hits in four straight games. And slugger Rhys Hoskins became the first Phillies player since 1900 to have three consecutive games with multiple extra-base hits and a home run. He’s the only player in the majors to do so this season. On the mound trying to cool off those bats will be Washington lefty Patrick Corbin (2-2, 3.82 ERA) and Philadelphia ace Aaron Nola (3-2, 3.00).Image credits: AP COMMENT LIVE TVcenter_img Last Updated: 1st September, 2020 09:25 IST LEADING OFF: Deadline Deals, Pineda Returns, Rays Roll Yanks Mike Clevinger, Starling Marte and Archie Bradley are among the notable players headed to new teams after a flurry of deals before Monday’s trade deadline Associated Press Television News SUBSCRIBE TO US FOLLOW USlast_img read more

Dodgers’ Hernandez doing well in Kendrick’s absence

first_img“Just getting a little more consistent at-bats, it’s a little easier for me to stay consistent,” Hernandez said, downplaying his recent torrid stretch.Hernandez is also tearing apart left-handed pitching, batting a National League-leading .411 (23 for 56) against southpaws.Hernandez has also found different ways to break into the lineup, starting 10 times at second base, 11 times at shortstop, eight starts in center field, five starts in left field and even one start in right field.“I really believe I can play every day,” Hernandez said. “It’s really up to whatever team I’m with and whatever that teams needs from me.“I can only control what I can control, and that’s what I do on the field.”Hernandez has also sought out advice from veteran shortstop Jimmy Rollins as he tries to hone his craft and become a viable everyday option.“Kike talks to me. I don’t talk to him, I try to run away,” Rollins said, laughing. “When you play with a guy up the middle, you have to have a relationship with him. You’ve got to talk to him about situations and different things about the game.“He’s a guy who wants to learn. His skill is very great. When he’s in there, he’s doing the job, he’s doing what’s expected of him. He makes plays, he’s smart and he doesn’t make mistakes. If you do that, you’ll find yourself thriving when your number is called.”Crawford gets nodSo why did outfielder Carl Crawford get the start against Reds left-hander David Holmberg?Mattingly said it was two-fold. Not only is Crawford swinging a hot bat, but outfielder Scott Van Slyke — the normal option against left-handers — was feeling sick.“Scott’s not doing too well. He’s a little under the weather,” Mattingly said. “Carl’s also starting to look like himself again. He looks like he’s getting hot.”VIDEO: Don Mattingly talks about starting Carl Crawford against a left-handed pitcherAlsoThe Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation dedicated its first universally accessible field for children with disabilities with the new Dodgers Dreamfield at Baldwin Recreation Center in Los Angeles. When you talk about all the things he can do, you almost automatically throw him into that utility role, and it’s unfair. “Kike looks like a guy right now who can play every day.”VIDEO: Watch Don Mattingly break down Kike Hernandez’s recent hot streakFinally getting regular playing time, Hernandez is showing surprising pop, steadiness at the plate and a flair in the field at a myriad of positions.Hernandez recorded a career-high tying three hits for the second consecutive game on Friday night and is batting .469 (15 for 32) with three doubles, two homers and five RBIs in his last 13 games since July 24 entering Saturday’s game.center_img Sometimes baseball players can be typecast, much like actors who repeatedly get cast for similar roles. When Kike Hernandez came to the Dodgers in an off-season deal with the Miami Marlins, he was billed as a super utility player who made the biggest splash by implementing the fan favorite “Rally Banana.”Turns out all Hernandez needed was an opportunity.Since Howie Kendrick sustained a hamstring injury Sunday, Hernandez has made six straight starts and is seeing his stock rise rapidly.last_img read more
