Southampton turned down day off to do extra training, reveals Fonte

first_img1 Southampton captain Jose Fonte has revealed the players turned down Ronald’s Koeman’s offer of a day off this week to instead concentrate on training. The high-flying south coast club made it five wins in a row with victory against Arsenal at the Emirates in the Capital One Cup on Tuesday night – but the entire squad attended training the next day on their scheduled break. And, Fonte has admitted that the extra day of preparation has benefitted the squad ahead of Queen’s Park Rangers’ visit to St. Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.“Obviously, you are very happy at winning the game, and possibly you would think: ‘Okay, we need a rest’,” the centre-back said.“But we decided as a team, and as a group, that it’s more important to accelerate the regeneration process, so when it comes to Saturday we give ourselves the best chance to win the game, which is going to be a massive game for us, so we can keep the momentum going.”“I spoke with Morgan [Schneiderlin], with Kelvin [Davis], with the more senior players, and we decided together that it would be better to come in the next day, because we want to win Saturday.“Then we spoke with the manager and the manager said: ‘Yes, okay, that’s good’.” Southampton captain Jose Fonte last_img read more
