China’s Vice Minister of Industry Arrives

first_imgThe Government will host the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, People’s Republic of China (PRC), Wang Jiangping, from June 20 to 22.During his stay, Mr. Wang will meet with a number of Government Ministers.Mr. Wang was met at the Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA) by Minister without Portfolio in the Economic Growth and Job Creation Ministry, Hon. Mike Henry, on June 20.Mr. Henry informed JIS News following a meeting with Mr. Wang that among the areas being examined is expansion of the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) under the Logistics Hub Initiative.SEZs create a specifically delineated location that is governed separately by the customs and tax regimes of the country, and is intended to provide targeted incentives and services to encourage investments in Jamaica’s logistics-based industries.Having a modern SEZ for Jamaica would result in greater investments (both domestic and foreign), increased employment and economic growth for the country.Mr. Henry, whose major responsibility surrounds SEZs, said the visit “is very important as we (prepare) ourselves for the development of the belt and road structure that relates to the creation of a logistics hub”.“The interest of expanding China’s position (is important to them) and they recognise that we are the most positioned country in terms of moving goods and services,” he said.“The development of economic zones is open to all investors from all over the world. I am inviting Jamaican investors to invest in the cluster of businesses,” he said.last_img read more

David then treated the children to an impromptu game of football in the playground of the North London school.Kentish Town Primary School is a Level Two Rights Respecting School, an initiative run by Unicef UK which supports schools to place the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of their ethos. It empowers pupils to realise their own rights and develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential.David chose to visit Kentish Town Primary School as today marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the mobilisation of the first World Children’s Day.UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham said:“This World Children’s Day we are handing over the reins to children, encouraging them to speak out for each other. One important lesson from my travels with UNICEF is that we need to listen to children about the world they want to live in. Today it’s been really inspiring visiting the school. It’s amazing to see how happy and confident the kids are and listening to them talk so passionately about learning and respecting the rights of children.”Jude, aged 11, a pupil at Kentish Town Primary School said:“It was really fun meeting David today hear him talk about how important it is to help UNICEF. He gave really good answers to all the questions we asked him. It was even more exciting because today is World Children’s Day!”In addition to today’s school visit, David has released a short film in collaboration with UNICEF, in which he quizzes children about their views of the world. During the heart-warming film, Beckham is seen in conversation with five children asking a series of questions such as what changes they would like to see for children in the future and what rules they would give grown-ups. The film was recorded in New York with children aged 6-10 years-old: Smith (6), Jenna (7), Fiona (7), Jayla (8) and Royce (10).Video: #KidsTakeover with David Beckham | UNICEFChildren all around the world have been celebrating World Children’s Day today by ‘taking over’ key roles in media, politics, business, sport and entertainment to help save children’s lives, fight for their rights and fulfil their potential. In the UK, hundreds of schools have taken part in the OutRight campaign – Unicef UK’s annual schools campaign that enables and empowers children and young people to speak out in support of children’s rights and celebrate World Children’s Day.David Beckham has been a long standing supporter of UNICEF since playing with Manchester United and became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2005. In 2015, his tenth year with Unicef, he launched 7: The David Beckham UNICEF Fund to help protect children in danger. David is working with Unicef to ensure that world leaders put children first and agree new development goals that will help end violence, preventable death and poverty for every child.last_img read more

Prime Minister highlights impact of Climate Change

first_imgFacebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp#Jamaica, September 26, 2017 – Montego Bay – Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, says climate change is real and presents a clear and present danger to countries across the world.“We must mention our sister islands that were devastated by hurricanes. In some cases, tourism was the single industry and in many cases the major industry in those islands, and they must and will rebuild,” Mr. Holness said.“However, this time they must factor in disaster resilience, recovery and adaptation in a systematic and institutional way.   The world has been forced to acknowledge that there is urgent need for responsibility, adaptation and resilience as we recognize our changing realities.   Climate change is real, and it will disproportionately affect those of us who are least prepared to respond,” he said. The Prime Minister was giving the keynote address at the 27th annual Jamaica Product Exchange (JAPEX) at the Montego Bay Convention Centre, St. James, on September 24.Meanwhile, Mr. Holness said the upcoming United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) conference will be another opportunity for Jamaica to be showcased on the world stage.   The Prime Minister said it is only fitting, with 2017 being designated the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, that Jamaica will proudly host such a prestigious conference.Mr. Holness pointed out that sustainability is a core feature of Jamaica’s growth agenda, adding that “we must find the right balance so that we have growth”, but not at the expense of the environment. He noted that Jamaica has a well-known and well-loved brand, and that through events like JAPEX, “we harness our collective capabilities and build on our strengths.”“Our brand is a fusion of our music, our hospitality, our culture, our food, our entertainment, our creativity and our innovativeness, all coming together to create a distinct meaning of a Jamaican product or service,” Mr. Holness added. The Prime Minister welcomed the participants and urged them to “take advantage of the world of business opportunities all in one place”.Released: JISPhoto credit: NASA Related Items:last_img read more

Sharlene Robinson. Before being scooted to the HMS Ocean by army boat, which was hoisted into the air to allow the delegation onto the 667ft long warship, we visited the DDME and UK managed Distribution Center, set up at the Customs Warehouse compound in GT.World Food Programme donated the storage tents which were erected post Hurricane Maria and which house tarps, shelter kits and relief supplies.  The tents are 320sq metres 240sq metres and were being filled up by UK Commandoes stationed in GT with support from 120 navy officers from the HMS Ocean. The Canadian Frigate is gone, the Bermudan Regiment left on Saturday, scheduled are three full days for the HMS Ocean and crew and about a week to a week and a half more for the UK Commandoes then the TCI will be left to complete the rebuilding without these teams which many agree have proven stellar partners, even family.“The HMS Ocean was operating at the commencement of this period in the east and Mediterranean when we received orders to immediately reverse course and head toward the Caribbean with all dispatch.   So we  steamed some four and a half thousand miles, crossing six time zones in only twelve days, a very fast response and I think that demonstrates how much this government’s steadfast commitment to the region and our determination to maximize support to the British Overseas Territories and the region more widely,” said Captain Robert Pedre. FDA says buying young peoples blood wont keep you from aging

first_img Plasma is the liquid part of blood that contains proteins to help with clotting. It can be used to manage bleeding. Patients whose blood is unable to clot can benefit from plasma, though there are still risks such as allergic reactions. Plasma infusions from young donors can involve administering large amounts of plasma, which can be linked with infectious, allergic, respiratory and cardiovascular risks, according to the FDA. Some people have charged thousands of dollars for infusions that haven’t been proven to be effective, the agency said. “Simply put, we’re concerned that some patients are being preyed upon by unscrupulous actors touting treatments of plasma from young donors as cures and remedies,” Gottlieb and Marks said. “Such treatments have no proven clinical benefits for the uses for which these clinics are advertising them and are potentially harmful.”The administration said it’ll consider taking actions against companies that abuse patients’ trust and that endanger their health, whether through their manufacturing conditions or by promoting purported treatments that haven’t been proven safe or effective.Following the FDA’s statement, Ambrosia Health, a startup that charged thousands of dollars for plasma infusions from young donors, said on its site that it has stopped patient treatments. The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.People considering plasma treatments should ask their health care provider if the FDA has reviewed a treatment before proceeding, the agency said. It’s also asking patients and health care providers to report negative side effects linked to treatments using plasma from young donors, for aging or similar conditions, to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program. The FDA said it’ll monitor the issue and take appropriate steps with state and local health departments and blood establishments. First published Feb. 19, 2 p.m. PT.Update, Feb. 20 at 9:43 a.m.: Adds that Ambrosia Health has stopped patient treatments following the FDA’s statement.  CNET Next Big Thing: The Invisible Doctor Sci-Tech Wellness Tags Now playing: Watch this: 0center_img 59:45 Wladimir Bulgar/Getty Images If you’re planning on getting infused with young blood to fight memory loss and aging, the US Food and Drug Administration would like you to reconsider. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb and Peter Marks, director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, warned in a statement Tuesday against getting infused with blood plasma from young donors. Therefore, these infusions shouldn’t be considered safe or effective, and consumers shouldn’t get the infusions beyond clinical trials with an institutional review board and regulatory oversight, it said. Google courts local businesses with new profile features

first_imgGoogle announced new features for local business profiles.  Getty Google wants to become the go-to hub for people searching for restaurants or other local businesses. The search giant on Thursday announced new features to revamp business profiles on Google Maps and search. Those are the pages that give you a restaurant’s rating, a snapshot at popular dishes and general information like store hours or the restaurant’s phone number. Now, business owners will be able to customize the cover photo you see at the top of the profile. Owners will also get to pick a new “short name” URL that customers can use to share the business profile with other people. Businesses can also reward people who follow them on Google by offering them exclusive deals. And the businesses that are most responsive to customers and keep their profiles up to date will be able to earn badges and receive a “local favorite” distinction.mod-1-phone-callouts-d2x-1Google is letting businesses do more to customize their profiles. Google Google is also offering store owners more options for window stickers, like one that says “Review us on Google,” and another that says, “Follow us on Google.””When we first started mapping out the world, we were first focused on getting users from point A to point B,” Bhavesh Mehta, a Google vice president of engineering, said at a press event in San Francisco. “Over time, we saw people wanted more information about businesses.”The new features take aim at other local business services like Yelp, which also offers business profiles with ratings and other information. Yelp has long been antagonistic towards Google’s local business efforts, arguing that Google abuses its dominance to prioritize its own listings and services over those of competitors. Google wouldn’t directly address the competition with Yelp, but said it’s focused on creating a good experience for users. The new features are part of Google’s push to make Maps about more than just navigation. Last year, Google announced features to make the app more social, such as a “for you” tab that offers tailored recommendations and a “match score” to tell you how much you might like a restaurant or business. Business profiles that you follow will show up in the “for you” tab. Google also said last month it’s bringing food ordering to Maps, search and its Google Assistant software by partnering with delivery services including DoorDash and Postmates. 1 Google Search gets AR, and Google Lens wants to be your… Tags Now playing: Watch this: Commentcenter_img Share your voice 4:19 Mobile Google Alphabet Inc.last_img read more

Study demonstrates evolution of stereotypes

first_img The research team led by Dr. Doug Martin of the Person Perception Lab at the University of Aberdeen used a technique they have used previously to study the evolution of language. They invented a series of aliens and randomly assigned them different colors, shapes and attributes such as selfishness, adventurousness, arrogance or trustfulness.A volunteer was then called in to learn about the aliens and memorize their personality traits and physical attributes. The volunteer then relayed this information to the researchers, who passed it on to the next volunteer, and so on down a communication chain. What they discovered was that stereotypes began to form almost immediately and particular shapes and colors became linked with personality traits. As it passed down the communication chain the information was unintentionally changed and simplified, and became more structured and thus easier to learn. Dr. Martin said the process seen in the research reflects the oversimplified nature of stereotypes, with social groups (and ourselves) categorized and assigned attributes, and he suggested that they form to help us make sense of the world around us and to give us some basic information as a starting point. The stereotype may turn out not to be applicable to a particular individual, but is nevertheless useful initially.Dr. Martin also pointed out that stereotypes are not fixed and do change over time. For example, a hundred years ago boys were traditionally dressed in pink, while blue was regarded as a “dainty” color more suitable for girls. Both genders wore dresses and played with dolls. The Person Perception Lab team studies many aspects of the transmission of information from person to person and the way in which the brain processes this information. Dr. Martin said their work on stereotypes could lead to being able to predict and even manipulate changes to stereotypes in the future, which could be of benefit to society.Dr. Martin presented his findings in a talk earlier this week at the British Science Festival, which is held in a different city each year. This year the Festival is being held in Aberdeen from 4-9 September. (Phys.org)—Researchers from Scotland suggest that stereotypes form and evolve over time through social transmission of information, similar to the way in which languages evolve. © 2012 Phys.org Citation: Study demonstrates evolution of stereotypes (2012, September 7) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2012-09-evolution-stereotypes.html More information: www.britishscienceassociation. … tishsciencefestival/center_img Explore further More to facial perception than meets the eye This document is subject to copyright.
