IN-FORM HARPS TRAVEL HOPING TO GIVE UCD STUDENTS A LESSON

first_imgA confident Finn Harps will travel to the UCD Bowl on Sunday evening looking to record their fourth win in a row as the hosts return to domestic action for the first time in a month.Harps 2-0 victory over Cobh Ramblers at a wet and windy Finn Park last Friday night was their third win in a row and also their third clean sheet in a row. Ciaran Gallagher saved a first half Cobh penalty to keep his 11th shutout of the season so far.“It was a good result on Friday but had Cobh scored the penalty it could have been a completely different story,” said Harps boss Ollie Horgan as he reflected on the game. “Cobh will count themselves unlucky that they didn’t get something out of the game.” The victory, coupled with the postponement of Wexford’s game against UCD, meant that Harps returned to the top of the table once more. And having gone through a blip that seen them lose three on the trot, Horgan is content to see his team remain in the promotion hunt.“Obviously we are happy to win those games which keeps us in touch, but we need to improve to have any chance of staying in the top part of the table,” he warned.UCD have been distracted in recent weeks with their European adventures, but Horgan is fully aware of the task that the students pose on Friday.“UCD have had an incredible Europa League campaign and have represented our league and in particular the First Division exceptionally,” said Horgan. “It didn’t surprise me with the way they play their football and with the talented individuals that they have. Huge credit to them and well deserved,” he continued. Sunday’s game only goes ahead after UCD’s European run came to an end on Thursday. Slovan Bratislava progressed to the next round after a 5-1 victory at the Bowl to progress on a 6-1 scoreline. While the scoreline looks emphatic, three of the five goals that Bratislava scored came in the last ten minutes of Thursday’s encounter.Despite the doubt about the Sunday’s game up until Thursday evening, Horgan said that it wouldn’t affect his team’s preparations.“We will prepare for the game going ahead on Sunday but if UCD had won on Thursday – which would have been great for all the teams in the league – we would have trained instead. The fact the game could have been postponed didn’t affect our plans at all.”Harps go into Friday’s game ten points ahead of UCD, but the students do have two games in hand on Horgan’s side. UCD haven’t played a league game in almost a month due to their participation in the qualifying rounds for the Europa League. Their last outing in domestic action saw them leave Cobh with a share of the spoils after an injury time Jason Abbott penalty gave the home side a point. The two meetings between the two sides this season have both finished in 2-2 draws. In both games, the students led twice only for Harps to bounce back on each occasion. Keith Cowan is once more unavailable for Harps but other than that Ollie Horgan will have a full panel to choose from.TEAM NEWSSuspended: None.Doubtful: None.Injured: None.Unavailable: Keith CowanFORM GUIDE (last six league games)Finn Harps: L-L-L-W-W-W (9 pts)UCD: W-D-W-W-D-D (12 pts)IN-FORM HARPS TRAVEL HOPING TO GIVE UCD STUDENTS A LESSON was last modified: July 24th, 2015 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:donegalfinn harpsUCDlast_img read more

Raiders vs. 49ers: Interesting concept, but too often a rivalry in repose

first_imgBay Area football fans salivated from one end of the 1970 NFL season to the other in anticipation of the first Oakland Raiders-San Francisco 49ers game that would rise to the level of bloodlust. The teams — the 49ers of the established NFL, and the Raiders of the upstart AFL — had met in exhibition games. But those glorified practices in no way reflected the searing animosity between the two leagues. The showdown on Dec. 20, at the end of the first season following the NFL-AFL merger, figured …last_img read more

How the A’s decided on their final Opening Day roster spots

first_imgOAKLAND — They say spring training stats do not mean much. But in the case of certain A’s players, the numbers either made or broke their case to make the Opening Day roster. The A’s 25-man roster was not as difficult a puzzle to predict at the start of spring training as it has been in years past. There isn’t much to change when you are coming off a 97-win season. The few question marks that did exist were on the pitching side, both in the bullpen and starting rotation. Great astronomy, with or without SKA

South Africa will host the core of the array, comprising about half the dishes, and it and eight partner countries in the region will accommodate the remainder. The first astronomical observations, expected in 2019, will help to answer long-standing questions such as the formation of the universe; why it’s expanding; the possibility of life on other planets; and the mystery of dark energy and dark matter.Ground-breaking technologyAt the isolated Northern Cape site which has been set aside for the SKA, an array of seven dishes is already operational – this is the Karoo Array Telescope, or KAT-7.The KAT-7 is a precursor to the larger 64-dish MeerKAT array, which itself is a precursor to the SKA.A ground-breaker in its own right, KAT-7 is the first radio telescope to consist of fibreglass dishes. These were produced on-site from a mould, and the same manufacturing facility will be expanded to accommodate the larger MeerKAT dishes, using local ingenuity and skills.MeerKAT is Afrikaans, meaning “more KAT”, but is also the name of an endearing little mongoose-like mammal that is indigenous to the Northern Cape and other Southern African regions. When completed in 2018, MeerKAT will be among the five largest radio telescopes in the world.Hanekom stressed that the MeerKAT construction will go ahead, whether or not the SKA is awarded to South Africa.“Great astronomy work will be done, with or without the SKA,” he said.Hanekom also said that the knowledge that has already been amassed is invaluable, and that the project has given rise to a new generation of scientists. The unprecedented scientific opportunities are expected to keep South African talent in the country, and attract expertise from overseas. The KAT-7 has caused much excitement in the local astronomy community with the capture of images of the Centaurus A galaxy and its associated black hole, located 14-million light years from Earth. But scientists are looking further ahead, and are queuing up to book research time on MeerKAT, which will be the largest radio telescope in the southern hemisphere. Already five years’ worth of observation time have been allocated to ten research projects, ranging from a study of radio pulsars to a high-frequency survey of the galactic plane.South Africa leading the wayProfessor Justin Jonas, SKA associate director for science and engineering, and head of Rhodes University’s physics and electronics department, is excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. He said that astronomy has been identified by the government as one of the fields in which South Africa is likely to succeed, because of geographic, natural and knowledge advantages.“We must have aspirations for cutting-edge science,” he said, “or we will always be viewed as a second-class nation.”Jonas said that South Africa’s government is wholly committed to the SKA and its related projects. The African Union has also stated its support for the project, and it is hoped that this will be one of a number of factors that gives South Africa an edge over Australia. The government has declared the entire Northern Cape province to be an astronomy advantage area, through the Astronomy Geographic Advantage Act of 2007. The only exemption is the Sol Plaatje Municipality, which encompasses Kimberley.Within the province, an area of 12.5 million hectares was proclaimed a radio astronomy reserve, and anyone entering must switch off their mobile and other electronic devices. Survey results show that the reserve is one of the quietest environments on earth, in terms of radio frequency, for radio astronomy. This makes it an ideal location for the sensitive SKA.The legislation means that any development that might interfere with the reception of radio signals must first be carefully considered. This high-level support has enabled South African scientists to leap ahead of their international colleagues in areas such as rapid prototyping.“For example, with our dishes we can now go from an engineering diagramme to an on-site antenna in less than a year,” said Jonas.Innovations in astronomy, he said, are helping to drive development in other industries. He mentioned another significant South African achievement – the second-generation Roach board, designed and produced locally.Roach is the reconfigurable open architecture computing hardware board that can be adapted to all kinds of digital signal processing requirements, including medical or telecommunications applications.“Roach 1 is now being used in every radio telescope in the world,” said Jonas. ”It can replace an entire rack of computers, and use a twentieth of the energy.”Because the development team has released the Roach design under an open source licence, the plans can be freely downloaded and used for an increasing number of applications, while the international development community grows.“The software is the key to getting the most out of Roach,” said Jonas. The KAT-7 uses Roach 1, but MeerKAT will most likely use Roach 3. Roach 1 was developed in collaboration with engineers from the University of California, Berkeley.last_img read more

What changes did your City (State) make to the code?

first_imgNow that you’ve finally learned the (model) code, it’s all different! At long last, after three years of proposed code changes, code hearings, floor votes, public comment period and final action hearings, a new International Residential Code (IRC) is developed and published. You’ve purchased it from the International Code Council and read through it in anticipation of a green-home building project. Now keep in mind, the IRC is just a guide, a model building code, and does not have the force of law until adopted. Normally during this adoption process the jurisdiction will add or subtract code requirements or modify the provisions that better suit that region’s interest. These modifications are usually known as local amendments. The adoption and enforcement at the local level varies across the nation according to each state’s organization and constitution; and whether the state is a “Dillon-rule” or a “home-rule” state. Generally, a Dillon-rule state is said to have complete authority over municipal government except as limited by the state or federal constitution. Because of this complete legislative control, a city or county government’s power is limited and only extends to the following: (1) rule of law (2) implied or incidental and (3) absolutely indispensable.Home rule can defined as letting the city or county enforce the state law. It transfers the authority from the state to the locality. About 40 states are home-rule, and about 10 are Dillon-rule. A Dillon-rule state will, generally (there are exceptions to every rule) have a statewide building code, and a home-rule state will have variations of state and local building codes. So check to determine what building code is enforced in your community. The State of Virginia, for example, is a Dillon-rule state and therefore has a statewide building code called the Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC). The adoption process for states, cities, or counties, irrespective of the state’s status, usually includes formal steps such as public notification, hearings, and, finally, acceptance. While the adoption process is pretty much the same nationwide, the changes themselves vary according to the locality or region. As much as the IRC is written to be a national standard, unique geographic or political influences tend to have an effect on the code. For instance, New Mexico and areas of Arizona have significant amendments to regulate earthen construction; adobe and rammed earth. Virginia has stair geometry with steeper inclines that the IRC permits. Almost 100 cities have green-building programs adopted that modify the code. There may be more restrictive requirements such as mandatory fire suppression systems for all homes, as in Scottsdale, Arizona. There may be a reduced requirement or even importation one or more of the appendices into the body of the code.Generally, the administrative provisions are changed to match the state law for permits, code violations, penalties, and such. It is important to have the model code itself, since these amendments are limited to the changes and not the bulk of the code itself.Be sure to check with your locality before designing a green home, getting a permit or calling for inspections. Things could be different than you’d expect! For example, there may be materials (like straw bale or adobe) that are permitted at the locality. There may be height or size limits on other materials, such as insulated concrete forms.last_img read more

Keeping Your Video Editing Projects Organized

first_imgKeeping a project clean and organized is essential. Spend less time searching for assets and more time editing. In this post, we share organization tips and a free project file.If you’re going to call yourself a professional, you should work like a professional. An insanely disorganized project is a nightmare, and ultimately reflects poorly upon you as en editor. We bring in freelancers pretty regularly at my office and if I’m given the choice to bring back a great editor who leaves a disaster of files and other mess in their wake or  a slightly less great editor who keeps things in order and under control you can bet I’ll choose the organized one every time. He or she makes it easier for me to quickly pick up the project for later revisions if necessary. In this post, I want to share a structure for  how I like to organize my video editing projects. This is an empty skeleton that I use as a basis for all projects, then fill-in as needed: Here’s how I use these bins, including the thinking behind them:The Audio BinGenerally, nothing goes in the top-level Audio folder. Everything should be sorted into the appropriate subfolder: Music, SFX (Sound Effects) or VO (Voice Over). The Edits BinSometimes labeled as “Sequences” by my coworkers, this bin should have the most current version of the project directly inside. Previous/outdated versions should be put in the Archive folder for reference if needed, but out of the way of the current version so that there’s no confusion if another editor has to pick up the project. The Selects bin is for timelines containing your top picks from the footage, organized by B-Roll, Interview (organized by interviewee, question/topic or lumped into one), Scene X, Y, Z, etc.The Footage BinAll project footage goes into here. If I have to sync audio and make merged clips, I typically make a Raw bin and a Merged bin within the Footage bin. Otherwise, I just break up by card, reel, day, subject – whatever makes the most sense for the project. The GFX BinThis bin is used for assets that aren’t based on footage and are generally computer generated: titles, adjustment layers, logos, lower thirds, motion graphics, etc.The VFX BinThis bin is used for assets that are based on footage, but aren’t raw footage themselves. An example would be a keyed and rendered green screen shot, a shot that’s had matte painting or wire-removal, etc. I also use this bin for things like film grain (Cinegrain, Gorilla Grain, et al.), lens flares, light leaks, etc.All I have to do to keep my project organized is drag to the right bin when I import my assets. Super simple. That structure covers the major things that I encounter in most projects, and I can add bins when I hit something new. Below is an example of how I’ve used these bins in a project. Click image for larger view.Organization should be a basic skill for any video editor. That said, I know a lot of editors just aren’t organized, no matter how much they want to be. It’s often due to laziness (they don’t want to take the time to make bins) or having such a tight deadline they don’t keep things organized during the video editing process. The best way to combat this tendency (whether you have that tendency, or a coworker or employee has it), is to take the majority of the work of out organizing your project. A blank project with these bins already in it is a great thing to keep handy. Just duplicate the project file for every new project and you’re all set up. All you have to do is watch where you drag.Quick Tip: If you’re working in a multi-editor office, take a screenshot of the bin organization structure and distribute it to every editor. Laminate it and post it up at every video editing station so that each editor will use the same structure throughout their edit.As a little time saver and incentive to keep you and your fellow editors sane, you can download a Premiere Pro CC project below with this bin structure already set up. As an added bonus, it comes set up with one of my favorite Premiere Layouts that I’ve worked up (assuming you have Premiere set to import workspaces). Happy editing![maxbutton id=”8″]last_img read more

Bengal BJP president’s vehicle attacked

first_imgAt least seven persons were injured in an attack on West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh’s vehicle in Purba Medinipur district on Monday. Mr. Ghosh alleged that supporters of the Trinamool Congress were behind the attack. “Since the Trinamool Congress is unable to tackle us politically, they are targeting us with brute force,” said Mr. Ghosh. The BJP leader was visiting the district to attend a BJP meeting. He was shown black fags and stones were thrown at his car, damaging its windows. The attack was carried out near Contai bus stand. Some media persons who reached the spot to report the violence were also injured. Several motorbikes, which were part of Mr. Ghosh’s cavalcade, were also attacked. TMC leader and MP from the district Dibyendu Adhikari denied any involvement of the State’s ruling party in the violence. “The clash was a result of factionalism in the BJP. The party members are fighting over the post of district office-bearers,” he said.last_img read more
