first_img Maxwell’s 96 guides Australia to series win MELBOURNE, Australia (AP): Glenn Maxwell scored 96 runs from 83 balls to guide Australia to a series-clinching three-wicket win over India yesterday in the third of five limited-overs internationals. Maxwell hit a six and a boundary at the start of the 49th over to tie the scores, but was out trying to hit a six to raise triple figures, leaving James Faulkner (20 not out) to hit the winning single with seven balls to spare. The win gave Australia a winning 3-0 lead in the five-match series following an opening five-wicket win in Perth and a seven-wicket in Brisbane. India, batting first for the third game in a row, posted 295-6, with Virat Kohli scoring 117 – his 24th ODI century – and sharing partnerships of 119 for the second wicket with Shikhar Dhawan (68) and 109 with Ajinkya Rahane (50). John Hastings led the Australian attack with 4-58 from 10 overs. Australia chased down 300-plus targets in Perth and Brisbane and were in a comfortable position chasing 296, with opener Shaun Marsh scoring 62 in partnerships of 48 with Aaron Finch (21) and 64 with Steve Smith (41) for the first two wickets. Sinclair fifth in Bermuda 10K HAMILTON, Bermuda (CMC): Jamaican Kenia Sinclair followed up her runner’s-up spot in Friday night’s elite women’s mile race with a creditable fifth-place finish in the women’s division of Saturday’s Bermuda Marathon Weekend 10-kilometre event held in wet and windy conditions. Sinclair, 35, was 14th overall in a time of 37 minutes and 42 seconds – around two minutes behind the British female winner, Faye Fullerton. The 31-year-old Fullerton was clocked in 35:48, ahead of compatriot Charlotte Arter in 35:48. Finishing third in 36:22 was Heather Kampf of the United States, who beat Sinclair into second place in the mile race. The overall 10K winner was Zambia’s Jordan Chipangama, who stormed to an emphatic victory over the undulating course – his fourth in Bermuda. Chipangama won the 10K event in 2014 and back-to-back half-marathon titles in 2013 and 2014. He also holds the half-marathon race record, which stands at one hour, 4:21 minutes, which he achieved in 2014. Coe: IAAF will probe bribery claims against Qatar LONDON (AP): IAAF President Sebastian Coe says claims of bribery by Qatar in the bidding process for the 2017 World Athletics Championship are being investigated. Ed Warner, chairman of UK Athletics, said yesterday his bid team was told “brown envelopes” were being handed to members of the IAAF Council the night before the vote in 2011 between London and Qatari capital Doha, which London won. Warner also said his team agreed to spend $7.2 million to cover prize money, having been warned they were unlikely to succeed if they did not. Speaking on BBC Radio alongside Warner, Coe said he was unaware of the claims and promised to look into them. Qatar has denied any wrongdoing in its bids for either the 2017 championship or the 2019 championship, which it will host.center_img NZ beat Pakistan by 10 wickets HAMILTON, New Zealand (AP): Martin Guptill made 87 and Kane Williamson 72 in an unbroken record partnership of 171 that steered New Zealand to a 10-wicket win over Pakistan in the second Twenty20 cricket international yesterday, levelling the three match series at 1-1. New Zealand took four leg byes from the fourth ball of the 18th over to win the match with eight balls to spare. In doing so, Guptill and Williamson passed the Twenty20 record partnership for all wickets against all nations that had been held for South Africa by Graeme Smith and Loots Bosman at 170. Pakistan seemed to have posted a sufficient total when they came in after batting on winning the toss with 168-7, just short of their winning tally in the opening match.last_img read more

Colon isn’t counted on yet

first_imgColon, who suffered some rotator cuff damage last season, is throwing from flat ground with his graduation to a mound two or three weeks away at best. “There are some hurdles he needs to clear, but the time frame hasn’t changed that much from what we talked about,” Scioscia said. “I think it’s probably a stretch to see him ready by opening day.” TEMPE, Ariz. – While Bartolo Colon is aimed toward making the opening-day roster, manager Mike Scioscia hardly painted as optimistic a picture. Scioscia, speaking during a brief respite between staff meetings Wednesday, said he does not expect Colon to pitch in a Cactus League game this spring and would be happy simply if the right-hander threw from a mound before camp ended. The regular duo of play-by-play man Steve Physioc and color commentator Rex Hudler will be reduced to about 100 telecasts this season. The remaining 50 local broadcasts will be handled by play-by-play man Jose Mota and color commentator Mark Gubicza. The Angels agreed to contract terms with six players: right-handers Jose Arredondo and Steven Shell, infielder Matt Brown, outfielders Terry Evans and Nick Gorneault and catcher Bobby Wilson. Another 16 players on the 40-man roster are expected to be signed in the upcoming days. Juan Rivera’s broken leg in winter ball means Chone Figgins will continue to be on call for a number of positions, even though he is being aimed at the starting third base job. Scioscia said Figgins is being looked at as the probable fourth outfielder to go along with his third-base duties. Tommy Murphy and Reggie Willits also are vying for the backup outfielder job. There still is no further timetable on Rivera’s return. Scioscia expects him to be in Arizona for a examination by staff doctors possibly in two weeks. Rivera currently is being seen by a doctor in Florida. Kendry Morales, who had knee soreness in winter ball, was given clearance to begin camp on time. Position players report Monday with the first full-squad workout on Tuesday. Frankie Rodriguez has experienced visa problems the past few seasons which delayed his arrival in camp, but Scioscia does not foresee any late arrivals this year. doug.padilla@sgvn.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2731 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. While his return could happen by the start of May, it could be delayed into June if he can’t get rehabilitated and build stamina in short order. “You try to (think) for the long term, too,” Scioscia said. “He has to be stepped up to a certain pace to make sure he holds up for this year. And in the future, we want to be careful when moving forward.” Scioscia hinted that mound work could be two weeks away but quickly backed off that. “He’s got a good amount of work ahead of him before he gets on the mound,” he said. The Angels announced multiple telecast teams for the upcoming season. last_img read more

Cassini to Rewrite Textbooks on Saturn

first_imgHundreds of scientists and engineers are waiting with eager anticipation for SOI: Saturn Orbit Insertion, as the schoolbus-sized Cassini spacecraft races for its closest approach to the ringed planet tonight.  Just before closest approach, Cassini will fire its main engine for 96 minutes to slow down the spacecraft and allow Saturn to capture it in orbit (see guide to SOI and diagram on the Cassini website).    Right after the burn, for about 75 minutes, Cassini will be flying high over the rings at close range.  The instruments will gather as many measurements and pictures as it can, because it will never again be this close to the rings or to Saturn.  Scientists do not predict that the high-resolution cameras will be able to resolve individual ring particles from this range – the best resolution will be about 50 meters per pixel, and most particles are much smaller than 10 – but it may detect wakes, waves and streams that will provide clues to the dynamic evolution of ring particles over time.  There should be good sample images of all three main rings, C, B, and A, as well as the narrow F ring.  After downloading its data during the night, Cassini will point to Titan for its first of 45 encounters.    Saturn has already provided Cassini’s instruments with a puzzle: the rotation rate appears to be slowing down.  According to Cassini’s radio and plasma wave detectors, Saturn is rotating about 1% slower than when Voyager made measurements in 1981.  (This is determined by timing radio pulses in the planet’s magnetic field, which is presumed to originate from deep within the fluid planet’s interior.)  Jupiter’s rotation rate has been rock solid for 50 years of measurements, so why Saturn should show this change is without explanation at this time.  The principal investigator for the radio and plasma wave instrument suspects it has something to do with the fact that Saturn’s polar and magnetic field axes are almost perfectly aligned, to within 0.2 degree – a characteristic unique to Saturn.  All other planets with magnetic fields show an offset of 10 degrees or more.  It is that offset that generates the magnetic dynamo, according to favored models; these models, however, cannot account for a field on an axisymmetric body.  How Saturn can have a magnetic field with a negligible offset is a major puzzle Cassini scientists hope to solve.Update  Stupendous success!  The orbit insertion burn occurred flawlessly.  Cassini followed its trajectory exactly as predicted, and then turned to capture the data and images.  Relieved scientists and engineers expressed their enthusiasm at the performance of the spacecraft.  Now the four-year adventure begins.  Some of the first science results will be posted in the July issue as soon as available. We hope to be able to bring you findings and analyses that the media will miss or misinterpret.  For instance, the media will always interpret phenomena in terms of the Sacred Parameter A, the “age of the solar system” (4.5 billion years), a figure invariably assumed without question, even when apparently young phenomena are being observed.    Of special interest will be the rings, not only because of their beauty, but because of their apparent youth.  Most ring scientists believe that the rings had to form relatively recently.  Even if 100 million years were allowed, that would only be 1/50 of the Sacred Parameter.  To hold onto A, they have to invoke ad hoc theories of a comet wandering into the Roche Limit of Saturn and disrupting.  Even so, the forces of plasma drag, sputtering, micrometeorite bombardment, light pressure and collisions would dissipate the rings in short order.  Will embedded moons be found to feed new material into the rings?  Stay tuned.    Also, we will provide balance to the claims about Titan having “prebiotic chemistry” that might be like the “building blocks of life” or like the “early earth in deep freeze.”  One scientist was even heard suggesting that Titan’s atmosphere may be a natural laboratory for the Miller Experiment (see 05/02/2003 headline).  Such statements assume evolution in spite of the evidence.  Also, it will be interesting to see if long-age believers can rescue Titan’s atmosphere from the evidence it is depleting rapidly (see 10/16/2003 headline).    Cassini is poised to make major contributions to our understanding of the solar system and its age.  For now, enjoy the ride; it will be high adventure tonight at Saturn!(Visited 11 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

In Sales? How You Can Distinguish Bad Products from Good

Tags:#product quality#Products#sales#sales pitch#sales proposition Related Posts Brad AndersonEditor In Chief at ReadWrite AI is Not the Holy Grail of Sales, at Least Not… Presentation Management: Key Component to the E… A career in sales is supposed to be lucrative and fulfilling, not frustrating. Good salespeople consistently close deals and increase their earnings, developing wide networks of happy customers along the way. Why, then, do so many salespeople struggle to live out the professional success of their dreams? Drive, training, persistence, and empathy all impact sales success, but one factor stands out above the rest: quality products.Don’t believe the hype that a good salesperson can sell anything. Customers today are more cautious about what, where, and how they buy. According to The ROBO Economy, a sales report from Bazaarvoice, 82 percent of smartphone users look up products online before they make in-store purchases. If they see a lot of negative reviews, they’ll drop the product and move on — regardless of how charming a salesperson might be.For anyone trying to make a living in sales, this new digital reality means product quality is more important than ever. Buyers are wary of bad deals, and today, they have all the resources they need to sniff them out. Salespeople looking for dependable, scalable incomes have to be cautious about which companies and products they choose to support.Use this process to determine whether a product is worth selling:1. Act like a buyer.Would you choose this brand over others? It’s easy to talk yourself into preferring your supplier’s product, but it’s another thing to convince a person who has better options elsewhere.Look at general review sites to see how comparable products stack up. If the product is more niche, check out industry-specific review sites to see how the public perceives the available options.“When you believe in the products and love them yourself, that comes across in a way that is much more authentic than if you didn’t have any connection,” says Mari Coyle, director of wine of ONEHOPE Wine. “Our wine is fantastic, made by a team of highly accredited winemakers based in Napa. In addition to that, every bottle supports a charitable cause, so the salesperson’s authentic story becomes part of the company story.” Coyle says people can sense whether a salesperson genuinely likes what she’s selling.2. Practice pitching to a tough crowd.Practicing in the mirror might help you maintain eye contact, but when it comes to overcoming objections, it’s better to work with a partner.Ask people in your network or social circle to help you test a prospective pitch. Encourage them not to hold back. You’re not trying to “win” this deal — you’re trying to determine if the product is worth advocating for. After a few rounds of practice, review your notes and think about how the conversations went. Did you feel like you were forced into an indefensible position based on a flaw in the product? Don’t get bogged down by personal preferences — some of the people you pitch won’t have any interest in the product, regardless of the brand behind it.3. Look at the current sales team. The best way to see if a product is worth selling is to look at the people already selling it. Are they successful and happy? Have they been selling the product for several years or just a few months? Does the brand have a small number of successful sellers, a large team of middling sellers, or another mix?Strong products attract strong salespeople. No one wants to waste time and energy generating demand for a product that has none. If the product is good, the team should be excited to sell it and visibly engaged with the target audience.Check out company reviews on Glassdoor to see what the salespeople say. When salespeople talk about high earning potential and empowerment, that’s a plus. When they talk about frustrations and silence from leadership, they could just be bad apples — or they could be on to something.4. Evaluate the competition. If consumers want to buy something, odds are good that more than one company fulfills that need. Look at competing products and brands in the space to determine which ones are most popular. Does your prospective product own most of the market? If not, does it have a loyal fanbase or a differentiating factor?Your product doesn’t have to be the biggest name in the market to be successful. The size of the market determines the sales potential. A product that only owns 5 percent of a $10 billion market, for instance, offers far more potential than a product that owns 90 percent of a $10 million market.Just as there are a few unscrupulous salespeople in the world, there are some companies that make bad products and swindle honest sellers into hawking junk. Don’t get tricked into selling a bad product for peanuts when you could be living the high life. Before you accept a new sales opportunity, consider whether the quality of the product deserves your loyalty.
