Two-time defending champion Olympiakos and its Greek league arch-rival Panathiniakos were bounced out of the Euroleague quarter-finals on April 25 after coming back from 2-0 deficits to tie their best-of-five series.Olympiakos was beaten 83-69 in Spain by Real Madrid, at least making a game of it. It was a rematch of last year’s final won by the Greek team, 100-88. Panathinaikos was destroyed 74-44 in Russia by CSKA Moscow in a humiliating rout. The Greens had won the title in 2011, beginning a run of three straight years for Greek teams to hold the title. No team had ever come back from a 2-0 deficit in Eurloeague quarterfinal play but both Greek teams at least had a shot at it after winning two straight at home before hitting the road.Olympiakos matched Real for almost three periods before the Spanish team put on a spurt to run away in the final quarter, mostly on the strength of rebounding.Olympiakos captain Vassilis Spanoulis came to play, scoring 19 points and was helped by 15 from Matt Lojeski, an American/Belgian player. Real Madrid will face Spanish league rival Barcelona in a Final Four match-up in Milan.Panathinaikos gave up the ghost from the get-go in Moscow, trailing from beginning to end in a rout that was even worse than the score.Guards Dimitris Diamantidis, Zach Wright and Roko Ukic shot 2-for-17 combined from the floor, ending it before it started, with only James “Airlines” Gist, with 10 points and Loukas Mavrokefalidis showing any moxie.CSKA Moscow will face Maccabi Tel Aviv in the other semifinal.TweetPinShare0 Shares
ZURICH — Prince Ali bin al-Hussein wants Sepp Blatter to leave now as FIFA President, and let a leader from outside the sport oversee the next election and reforms of soccer’s scandal-scarred governing body. The former FIFA Presidential candidate urged the executive committee, which meets later July 20, not to rush into an early election date.“The future of FIFA is at stake,” Prince Ali, a Vice President for four years until May, said in a statement to The Associated Press. “If a December election is called, there will not be the meaningful change in the leadership of FIFA that we so desperately need.”Change must start with Blatter’s immediate departure, the Jordanian prince said in his first public comments since June 2 when the embattled FIFA president announced his exit plans under pressure from U.S. and Swiss federal investigations of corruption.“President Blatter’s resignation cannot be dragged out any longer. He must leave now,” Prince Ali said, insisting his former opponent “cannot be permitted to plan his succession and manage this election process.”Blatter’s stunning speech followed four days after a 133-73 election victory over Prince Ali, who gained votes from member associations in each of FIFA’s six continents.Since then, Blatter has avoided FIFA events held in countries which have an extradition treaty with the United States.Seemingly wanting to cling on to office after 40 years at FIFA, Blatter prefers an election as late as March and have time to improve his legacy by driving through modernizing reforms.Prince Ali joined longtime World Cup sponsor Coca-Cola and former FIFA advisers Transparency International in calling to exclude a man who presided over a scandal-hit organization from the process of shaping its future. They want FIFA to appoint a respected figure from outside the sport.“An interim independent leadership must be appointed to administer the process of the elections, in addition to the reforms that are being discussed prior to the elections,” Prince Ali said. “Only an independent party can ensure that sufficient safeguards are put in place to ensure a robust process and meaningful timetable.”Signaling a split with his previous backers at UEFA, the sport’s European confederation, Prince Ali also warned against FIFA rushing its 209 member associations into the earliest possible election day.“No date before March 2016 can be justified,” he said.FIFA rules require a four-month campaign following a deadline for would-be candidates to file nomination papers. The December option is unfair on FIFA members, said Prince Ali, who has been president of Jordan’s national football body since 1999.“It will not be possible for any of the other football associations of the world to put forward credible candidates from our community,” he said. “It is their absolute right to be a part of this process, and to have time to carefully consider the future without being rushed into an early election.”Prince Ali gave no indication in his statement of whether he intends to run again for the FIFA presidency.Still, he said in a June 2 interview with CNN that he wanted the best for FIFA and would run if members wanted him to. UEFA President Michel Platini is considered a favorite for the role, but has not declared intent.(GRAHAM DUNBAR, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shares
ATLANTA — Didi Gregorius and Brian McCann combined to give the New York Yankees’ lineup a much-needed boost.Gregorius drove in a career-high six runs, McCann hit a three-run homer in his return to Atlanta and the Yankees shook off a scoring slump to beat the Braves 15-4 on Aug. 28.The Yankees scored a total of seven runs in losing three of their last four games to fall 1½ games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East. They scored nine runs in just the first two innings against the Braves.“This was a big night for us,” Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said. “It just shows you everyone is capable of producing in this lineup.”Gregorius had four hits, including a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run single in the second. McCann, the former longtime Braves catcher, added his three-run homer in the eighth.“Tonight was huge,” McCann said. “You play so many games in a long season, everybody goes through slumps. Over the long haul, I really like this lineup.”Gregorius set his previous career high when he drove in four runs at Texas on July 27.Masahiro Tanaka (10-6) allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings.Atlanta’s Freddie Freeman drove in two runs with two hits, including a third-inning homer.Braves outfielder Jonny Gomes, making his first career appearance as a pitcher, gave up two runs in the ninth, including a homer to Chris Young leading off the inning. Gomes raised his arm in celebration and raced to the dugout after striking out pitcher Bryan Mitchell to end the inning.McCann, who played his first nine seasons with the Braves, received a warm ovation before his first at-bat in his return to Atlanta. He tipped his helmet to the fans. He had three walks and drove in four runs. The Yankees led 9-2 after two innings despite having their first two batters retired in each inning.Following Chase Headley’s two-run, ground-rule double that bounced over the wall in center field, Gregorius hit a three-run homer into the seats in right for a 5-0 lead in the first.Freeman had a run-scoring single in Atlanta’s two-run first inning that would have been bigger if not for Jacoby Ellsbury’s inning-ending catch in deep center field.Running with his back to the infield, Ellsbury reached up to catch Christian Bethancourt’s two-out drive with two runners on base before sliding on the warning track.“That saved me,” Tanaka said through a translator.Ellsbury’s status for the game had been in doubt due to a hip injury.Williams Perez (4-5) gave up eight runs in 1 2-3 innings. It is the fifth time in his last six starts he has allowed four or more runs. Perez and Detwiler combined to issue six walks in the first two innings.Mitchell, reinstated from the seven-day concussion disabled list before the game, gave up a run-scoring single to Bethancourt in the ninth.(CHARLES ODUM, AP Sports Writer)TweetPinShare0 Shares

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Indiana Pacers can finally smile on their four-game road swing.Grinding out a 103-96 win over the Milwaukee Bucks erased the bitter taste of back-to-back defeats to 40-loss teams Atlanta and Dallas during the first two stops on the trip.Victor Oladipo had 21 points to lead the Pacers, who held on after nearly blowing a 17-point lead in the middle of a mistake-laden fourth quarter Friday night. But any win over a fellow Eastern Conference playoff hopeful can boost a team’s confidence, especially on the road.“From the arena to the players to the (officials), it definitely felt like a playoff atmosphere,” Oladipo said. “It was a great win for us.”With his team trailing by five, Milwaukee’s Khris Middleton missed a corner 3-pointer off an inbounds play with 8.9 seconds left. Bojan Bogdanovic hit two foul shots at the other end to seal it and hand the Bucks their fourth straight loss. The Bucks nearly stormed back from a 93-76 deficit with 6:34 left. Indiana committed four turnovers during a 12-0 Milwaukee run that tightened what looked to be a blowout.“We had some turnovers late in the game, a little careless with the ball,” Pacers coach Nate McMillan said. “You have to value every possession.”Oladipo hit a runner in the lane with 1:13 left for a 98-92 lead to slow Milwaukee’s momentum. He also scored six straight Indiana points during a 14-1 spurt in the third that helped the Pacers build a double-digit edge in the fourth.“That’s where I thought it went wrong, middle to end of the third,” Bucks coach Joe Prunty said. “The pick-and-roll was really causing us problems … and then on the other end of the floor (the ball) wasn’t moving as freely.”Lance Stephenson added 16 points for Indiana, and Bogdanovic had 14 after going 12 of 13 from the foul line.Middleton led all scorers with 30 points, and Giannis Antetokounmpo added 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Bucks. Milwaukee looked out of sorts at times offensively and alternated near-misses with out-of-control possessions until the near-comeback in the fourth quarter.“We’re not moving the ball side-to-side as much as we need to,” Middleton said.TIP-INSPacers: After an ugly 24-turnover game in a loss Wednesday at Atlanta, Indiana’s 13 turnovers against the Bucks were in line with its season average of 13.4. … Indiana entered 13-16 on the road, matching last season’s win total.Bucks: Jason Terry made his first start since Jan. 22, 2016, with Houston. The 40-year-old guard blocked three shots for the first time since Dec. 22, 2010, with Dallas against Philadelphia. … G Tony Snell missed his second straight game with a bruised right thigh. The backcourt is already thin with Malcolm Brogdon (left quad) and Matthew Dellavedova (right ankle) still sidelined.ON GUARDSIt didn’t help Milwaukee that the injury-thinned backcourt also had to deal with foul trouble for starting point guard Eric Bledsoe, who was saddled with two fouls for much of the first quarter and played much of the fourth with five. Bledsoe finished with 15 points on 3-of-11 shooting.SLOPPY STARTA choppy first half ended with the Bucks leading 46-45. The game got off to a testy start after officials called five technical fouls in the last 6:14 of the first quarter, including one each on Stephenson and Milwaukee’s Sterling Brown after the players got tangled up under the basket. At one point early in the second quarter, the teams had combined for 15 fouls and 19 field goals.“Both teams were getting after it from the start. Both teams are playing for the same thing,” McMillan said.GIANNIS’ NIGHTAntetokounmpo was 6 of 18 from the floor but went 10 for 12 at the foul line.“We need him to be aggressive. MILWAUKEE (AP) — Eric Bledsoe replaced the injured Giannis Antetokounmpo as the Milwaukee Bucks’ all-purpose threat and ran circles around the Orlando Magic.Coach Joe Prunty was just as impressed with the contributions from his quick point guard that didn’t make the stat sheet.Bledsoe had his fourth career triple-double with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists in a 102-86 win on Monday night in the final regular-season game at the Bradley Center.“For as good as he was statistically tonight, there are things you don’t see on the stat sheet and that ability to get on the ball and defense,” Prunty said, “and that’s critical for us.”Shabazz Muhammad added season-high 22 points and helped spark a 20-6 run in the third quarter for the Bucks, who leapfrogged Miami for sixth in the Eastern Conference. The Heat lost to Oklahoma City on Monday.A win on Wednesday night on the road against the Philadelphia 76ers would clinch the sixth seed for Milwaukee.“We put ourselves in a position to where we’re in a pretty position to determine where you want to be if that’s what you want to do,” center John Henson said. “But we want to be the highest seed possible, so that’s the goal.”Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo winks from the bench during a time out in the second half of an NBA basketball game against the New York Knicks, Saturday, April 7, 2018, at Madison Square Garden in New York. Orlando was 18 of 34 from 3-point range that night to withstand a 38-point outburst by Antetokounmpo. The shooting touch was missing Monday, when Orlando was just 5 of 24 from behind the arc.The Magic couldn’t make up for the misses on the defensive end, especially in the third quarter.“It’s been the case all season. Our defense has never been consistent enough,” coach Frank Vogel said.Milwaukee won its second straight game without Antetokounmpo, who is resting a sore right ankle. Both victories came against 50-loss teams. They got a huge lift on Monday from Bledsoe, with help from Muhammad and Jason Terry off the bench. They helped push the Bucks on the 20-6 run over the final 5:27 of the third to build a 74-67 lead.“We stopped getting stops. We were defending really well up until that point,” Magic forward Aaron Gordon said.Terry, the savvy veteran guard, immediately gave the Bucks a spark by forcing a turnover on the inbounds play after Bledsoe’s two foul shots. Muhammad gave the Bucks a presence off the dribble to help make up for the absence of the free-wheeling Antetokounmpo.“Shabazz played a (great) game all night long, played in attack mode … got to his strengths in the paint,” forward Khris Middleton said. The Bucks led comfortably the rest of the way to close out the regular season at the Bradley Center. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is facing sharp pushback over a proposal to cut federal funding to the Special Olympics.Celebrities, politicians and activists have taken to social media to rebuke DeVos for her plan to cut funding for the group as part of $7 billion in reductions in 2020. The organization received $17.6 million from the Education Department this year, but DeVos says it should be supported through philanthropy.House Democrats grilled DeVos in a budget hearing Tuesday, with Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., calling the cut “appalling.”Others calling on DeVos to rethink the decision include former Ohio Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, and Julie Foudy, former captain of the U.S. women’s soccer team.A department spokeswoman says DeVos supports the organization and has donated to it in the past.By: Collin Binkley, AP Education WriterTweetPinShare0 Shares

Parasoft release the Parasoft SOAtest Smart API Test Generator. This innovative technology uses artificial intelligence to convert manual UI tests into automated API tests, lowering the technical skills required to adopt API testing. By leaning on smart technology to perform the heavy lifting, it’s easier for organizations build and scale a comprehensive API testing strategy, which until now has posed significant challenge to software teams. To learn more about the Parasoft SOAtest Smart API Test Generator, visit: www.parasoft.com/smartThe Smart API Test Generator solves this core problem facing software development organizations today. In today’s software projects, up to 80% of testing time is spent either executing manual UI tests or fixing automated UI tests that have broken as a result of application change. As a result, manual testing isn’t keeping pace with development, and while organizations know that API tests can more precisely pinpoint the root cause of defects because they are closer to the code, easier to automate, and more resistant to application change, due to the higher learning curve and specialized skills required to adopt API testing, organizations tend to lean on UI testing and fail to realize the benefits of API testing. Controlled by an easy-to-deploy browser extension, the Smart Generator monitors underlying API calls that are made while a user is manually testing an application, and then uses artificial intelligence to discover patterns and understand relationships between those API calls in order to create fully-automated, scriptless API test scenarios that users can interact with without knowing how to code an API test. Once built, those API tests are automatically imported into the industry-leading Parasoft SOAtest, which enables users to parlay their tests into a comprehensive API testing strategy, using SOAtest’s visual tooling, test flow logic, and data solutions to cover more application logic and build complete end-to-end tests, paving the way for more test maturity and automation.Share this:TwitterFacebookLinkedInMoreRedditTumblrPinterestWhatsAppSkypePocketTelegram Tags: Tools & Software Continue Reading Previous TI: wide-VIN DC/DC buck regulators simplify the design of industrial power suppliesNext AAEON: industrial embedded boards supported by AAEON community

\R Rio De Janeiro, Jul 8 (AFP) A Brazilian appeals court judge on Sunday quashed a fellow judge’s bombshell ruling ordering the release of jailed former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, in a day of legal tumult that comes just months before the South American country’s presidential vote.Though he is serving a 12-year sentence for corruption, the wildly popular leftist Lula, 72, continues to lead opinion polls ahead of October’s election and has vowed his name will be on the ballot. In his Sunday afternoon ruling, Judge Pedro Gebran Neto overturned a shock order to free Lula, which dropped just hours earlier from Judge Rogerio Favreto at an appeals court in Porto Alegre — the same one that had ordered the ex-president’s arrest.Favreto, the weekend duty judge, had ruled in favor of several deputies of Lula’s Workers’ Party, who on Friday submitted a habeas corpus application on the former president’s behalf, arguing he had been illegally imprisoned. On the heels of the first ruling, top anti-corruption judge Sergio Moro — who originally sentenced Lula in July 2017 — said Favreto did not have the power to secure the leftist’s release.Gebran Neto followed suit, instructing federal police at a prison in Curitiba to keep Lula behind bars.Lula has been imprisoned since April following his conviction for accepting a seaside apartment as a bribe from Brazilian construction company OAS.He has insisted on his innocence and branded the corruption accusations a political conspiracy aimed at thwarting his electoral aspirations. After ruling Brazil from 2003 to 2011, Lula left office with sky-high ratings following an economic boom and widely praised social programs to reduce poverty.advertisement”Lula free now!” read the popular politician’s Twitter account after Favreto’s order, praising the short-lived hope for “the end of the illegal imprisonment of Lula.” But even if released, Lula could see his candidacy invalidated by the South American country’s electoral court.Brazilian courts have repeatedly stifled his many efforts to secure release.Just last month the South American country’s Supreme Court withdrew Lula’s appeal from its agenda, after a lower appeals court ruled the prison sentence could not be referred to the top bench. The lower court said the top chamber should only handle cases related to possible constitutional violations, a standard which Lula’s request did not meet.Prosecutors in May filed new graft charges against Lula, his ex-economy minister and two other political figures allegedly promised $40 million by the Odebrecht conglomerate, which is also linked to corruption scandals elsewhere in Latin America. The charges are part of operation “Car Wash,” Brazil’s biggest ever anti-graft crackdown. It has targeted several former presidents, current President Michel Temer and politicians from all major parties.Investigators discovered that politicians and their parties were allegedly taking money from Odebrecht and other big companies in exchange for political favors and contracts with state oil company Petrobras.Yet Lula and his supporters remain steadfast in their goal to take back control of Brazil’s executive branch.Just last week the former president — who had been writing football commentary from jail, which a veteran Brazilian sports journalist and leftist sympathizer then read on air — ceased commenting on the World Cup to comply with electoral rules forbidding potential candidates from making television and radio appearances after June 30. About the battery, rumours suggest that the Mi Max 3 will be backed by a huge 5000mAh battery. But then, that being the case, if Mi Max 3 comes with a 5000mAh battery, it means that the device will have a smaller battery than the Mi Max 2 which sports a 5300 mAh battery setup.advertisementOther rumours reveal that the Mi Max 3 will come with a dual camera setup on the rear panel and single sensor of the front. Croatia exceeded all expectations as they came agonisingly close to winning the World Cup 2018 final before losing to France 4-2 in the final on Sunday. It has been great achievement for a nation with a population of little over four million. The Luka Modric’s side won all three group matches as they defeated Nigeria, Argentina and Iceland to finish at the top of their group. In the knockouts, the Croatians registered three consecutive come-from-behind victories as they reached their first World Cup final. But the fairytale is now over and now comes a return to a harsh football reality of sketchy infrastructure and scandals for Croatia.2018 FIFA WORLD CUP: FULL COVERAGEWith Modric most likely having played his last major international tournament at the age of 32, and several of his teammates, including Ivan Rakitic (30) and the 32-year-old Mario Mandzukic, in the twilight of their careers, Croatia’s presence in the World Cup final is an event unlikely to be repeated soon.Modric was the standout of the team and can still earn the title of world player of the year, breaking the stranglehold of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.Croatia almost failed to qualify for the tournament in Russia, needing a 2-0 victory at Ukraine in their last group match to earn second spot that sent them into a playoff against Greece.FIFA World Cup 2018: Full list of prize winnersIt was the start of Zlatko Dalic’s term at the helm and the coach managed to guide them to Russia where they displayed some of the finest soccer on show.advertisementDalic’s future, however, is still unclear despite having a contract until 2020.”I will take a time out, take a breather. I never take decisions overnight,” the soft-spoken coach said on Sunday when asked about seeing out his contract.”At this moment I am not thinking of anything else but going back safely to Croatia and taking a rest.”Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic and Emmanuel Macron bond at World Cup 2018 FinalDalic, however, knows any long-term decisions are difficult to take in Croatia, which is still engulfed in the biggest soccer scandal the country has seen.Only last month a Croatian court sentenced former Dinamo Zagreb chief Zdravko Mamic to six-and-a-half years in prison for fraud and corruption.Croatia’s state attorney has also charged Modric with giving false testimony in the case, a major black spot on the player’s reputation.Coupled with the country’s limited resources to improve their football infrastructure, it was no wonder Dalic called their World Cup run a miracle.”Something has to be started, if not now then when? We have character and pride but in all other aspects we have to improve,” Dalic said before the final.”This is the ideal moment to say ‘let’s do something’. Sport has brought so much joy to the people.”We have definitely written ourselves into history, given the conditions and infrastructure back home, we are a miracle.”It will take more than that to keep Croatia in the forefront of international football.(With Reuters inputs)

If the market is to grow in India, then we need more top-class players playing at the highest level,” Steve told PTI in an interview.”Winning three gold medals at the CWG is a good start, it has really taken the imagination of the sport to the people and now we have to take the next step.”Paired with the the CWG performance, the advent of a professional league, Ultimate Table Tennis (UTT), provides the players with the “much needed exposure” and Steve feels Indians have emerged as the dark horses.”With Ultimate Table Tennis providing the exposure to the players, clubbed with high-performance programs with international coaches, the Indians have been on a roll.””I really hope that UTT grows. However, UTT is still two years old, a baby, and to be able to execute an event of such a magnitude is a truly commendable feat. The level of players who are coming in is pretty good.”advertisementSteve also lavished praise on India chief national coach Massimo Costantini and expressed his desire to work with the Italian.”I really like the head coach from Italy, I hope we can work with him also in the future. He could maybe also help us with our future projects because there aren’t a lot of people that have been able to go outside their country and bring different styles and that’s really a successful story,” he said.Although India’s confidence has also been boosted by the new ranking, under which as many as six paddlers had recently featured in the top 100, the ITTF has received a lot of flak from traditional powerhouses like China. Defending the decision, Steve says it was a commercial move.”The broadcasters want the best players, the sponsors want the best players and the new world ranking encourages the best to play at top events. It’s quite simple, you need ranking that supports your products, which are our major events.”Our past philosophy provided a ranking at a technical level but that didn’t necessarily support our product because the former ranking meant that one didn’t need to play all the events, as soon as one got a high ranking they could miss events. And that doesn’t help grow the commercial products,” he explained.Taking inspiration from the Badminton World Federation which has been successful in popularising the sport, Steve feels this is the right time to broaden TT’s horizon by tapping in on the social media age.”In the 1960s when television became a key part of how sports was presented around the world, we (ITTF) didn’t take the necessary steps that time to move on the new trend. However, we are catching up now in this new age of Social media. I believe Table Tennis is an extremely viewer-friendly sport and will gradually pick up like tennis and badminton.” he said. The Team India management’s actions make it clear that they do not see merit in Sunil Gavaskar’s suggestion to have extra practice sessions after being blown away by England’s swing bowling at Lords.Virat Kohli and Co have opted to only have two practice sessions ahead of the Trent Bridge Test, starting August 18.Gavaskar was also critical of the Indian team’s decision to go into the five-match Test series with just one practice game despite a seventeen-day break after the end of ODI series.Rohit Sharma ready to open in Test cricket if offered a chanceAnd now, India’s limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma has said that the best way to prepare for an overseas tour is to play “as many matches and have as many practice sessions as possible”.”You have to prepare for the conditions and the best preparation you can have is by going to that particular country and playing as many matches and have as many practice sessions as possible.””It cannot happen because we get few days to prepare for a series. But whatever time you get, be it in Mumbai or Australia or England, you try and prepare to the conditions accordingly,” he added.India finally practice ahead of crucial Trent Bridge Test vs EnglandAs is the case this time, unlike South Africa, India had more time at disposal in England and it’s quite possible some players in the touring squad may echo Rohit’s thoughts.Rohit also conceded there is precious little the batsmen can do in the middle of the series, faced with the quality English bowling.advertisement”Its very tough to make changes in between. Whatever changes you do, you have to do it at the start. Trying to change a whole lot in middle of the series, would not be a good idea. You can do minor changes, but you cannot do a whole lot,” he stated.Giving an insight into the way he has dealt with pressure in white or red ball cricket, Rohit suggested some Indian batsmen should strive to counter-attack if it suited their game.”Every batsman in the squad know their strengths and weaknesses, so what they can do is go back and try and strengthen that. The English bowlers are more of swing bowlers, so our batsmen can focus on that aspect of the game.”It is up to the individuals on how they want to prepare and counter swing bowling. All the bowlers are trying to swing the ball rather than keeping it fast or bouncy. They are trying to swing the ball and get us out. The batsmen know about it and they are working hard. They can come back in the next Test and put the English bowlers under pressure. In the past I have seen that when you put them under pressure, most of the teams struggle. If we can do it, then nothing like it,” he said.
England’s Football Association’s plans to sell Wembley Stadium and invest around £600 million into grassroots facilities and projects were in tatters on Wednesday after potential purchaser, American Shahid Khan, withdrew his offer. The billionaire owner of the NFL (National Football League) club Jacksonville Jaguars made his offer public in April and the proposed sale had been discussed by the FA’s Board with the full FA Council to have voted on the matter on October 24.However, the outcome was in doubt with the sale of the iconic national stadium dividing opinion.”At a recent meeting with Mr Khan he expressed to us that, without stronger support from within the game, his offer is being seen as more divisive than it was anticipated to be and has decided to withdraw his proposal,” FA chief executive Martin Glenn said in a statement.”There has been much deliberation on both sides of this debate and it has undoubtedly raised awareness of the issue that community football facilities in England need significant investment.””We will continue to work together to identify new and innovative ways of investing in community football facilities in the future,” added Glenn.Khan, who also owns English Premier League club Fulham, said his offer had not received the backing he had hoped for.”At this moment, following last week’s FA Council hearing, it appears there is no definitive mandate to sell Wembley and my current proposal, subsequently, would earn the backing of only a slim majority of the FA Council, well short of the conclusive margin that the FA Chairman has required,” Khan said in a statement.advertisement”The intent of my efforts was, and is, to do right by everyone in a manner that strengthens the English game and brings people together, not divides them,” he added. There had been opposition to the sale from within the game with some critics questioning the wisdom of surrendering ownership of the national stadium and others sceptical of the future investments in the game.”Unfortunately, given where we are today, I’ve concluded that the outcome of a vote next week would be far from sufficient in expressing the broad support favored by the FA Chairman to sell Wembley Stadium,” Khan said.”Until a time when it is evident there is an unmistakable directive from the FA to explore and close a sale, I am respectfully withdrawing my offer to purchase Wembley Stadium.”However Khan left the door open, should his idea win broader backing.”I cannot rule out revisiting the opportunity at another time when perhaps the Football Association family is unified in its views on the opportunity,” he said.”I recognize the passion many people have for Wembley and what it means to English football, and will be willing to re-engage with the FA on this matter under proper circumstances.”The new Wembley Stadium opened in 2007 on the site of the original venue and cost around £750 million to build.Under the plan, Wembley would have remained the home to major football matches such as the FA Cup final and would also have been available to England for internationals — outside of autumn when it could have been used for NFL games.

Naomi Osaka smashed her racket into the court after losing the first set. She tumbled to the court when she tripped in the second. The US Open champion recovered both times and avoided slipping out of the Australian Open on Saturday with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 win over Hsieh Su-wei.The fourth-seeded Osaka got a warning from the umpire after she spiked her racket in frustrating after Hsieh took the first set with three breaks of service. The 33-year-old Hsieh, who plays with a double-handed grip on both sides and uses a mixture of spin and slice and drop shots to unsettle her rivals, has taken some top 10 players out of majors before. She reached the fourth round last year here, after beating Garbine Muguruzu, and at Wimbledon, where she beat top-ranked Simona Halep. The 21-year-old Osaka was getting flustered, unable to dictate rallies and seemingly unable to find a way to deal with Hsieh’s unusual style. She found a way back, though, from 4-2 down in the second set when Hsieh was one point away from a 5-2 lead.Osaka got an important break, rallying from 0-40 to win five straight points and converting it with a deep, powerful backhand that Hsieh barely retrieved but can’t keep in play.Hsieh had a breakpoint chance in the next game but couldn’t convert, with Osaka saving it with another backhand winner that reinforced the change in momentum. Apart from the tumble, when she rolled her right ankle early in the game as she served for the second set – she held up her thumb to let everyone know she was OK – Osaka was in control until the end.advertisement”Anything that I can do to stay here a bit longer, I tried to do,” said Osaka, who’d never been past the fourth round of a major before last year’s U.S. Open, where she beat Serena Williams in the final.Asked how she managed to get herself back into the contest against Hsieh, Osaka smiled and said it was simple.”I have fun every time I play,” she said, even if sometimes it doesn’t seem apparent. She quickly reminded the crowd: “You guys didn’t see me slam my racket, that’s not something that I did!”Meanwhile, Serena Williams will continue her bid for an eighth Australian title and an Open-era record 24th Grand Slam singles title overall when she plays Dayana Yastremska later Saturday on Rod Laver Arena. A win for Williams on day six of the tournament will set up a fourth-round match against either her older sister, Venus, or top-ranked Halep.
It’s raining Google Home Mini in the United States or at least in a small stadium in the States. When you go to watch a sports match or a movie or a theatre performance, you expect to be wowed by the spectacular performance of the artists or the atheletes. But what if you booked the tickets to a game and you get surprised by Google instead? Yes, you heard me right, Google.Last night at the NBA Western Conference Finals game between the Golden State Warriors and Portland Trailblazers at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California, Google gave away nearly 20,000 Google Home Mini smart speakers to the fans in attendance at the stadium. The Mountain View, California headquartered tech giant had partnered with the Golden State to surprise all the 19,596 fans, who had come to witness the basketball game, with a Google Home Mini, 9To5 Google reported. In order for the entire stadium to receive the Google Home Mini smart speakers, one lucky fan – Bo Harkins from Walnut Creek – had to take a shot from half court. That’s a heavy responsibility to put on the shoulders of a lone man. What the fans didn’t realise was that even if Harkins had missed the shot, they would all still be taking a Google Home Mini home. And they did.But the list of surprises for the NBA fans was not restricted to getting a Google Nest branded smart speaker for free. All the fans who activated their Google Home Mini smart speakers were entered into a lucky draw where they got a lucky chance to win tickets to the game for free, giving the NBA fans a double blast of surprises.advertisementIf you are wondering why did Google show so much of genorosity by giving away nearly 20k smart speakers for free? Well, according to a separate report by Android Guys, the company wanted to “thank the fans for being awesome”. Of course, one cannot help but wonder if Google wanted to show the NBA fans the things that they could do with its smart speaker and by extension its virtual assistant – Google Assistant, and promote its Google Nest branding at the same time.To recall, Google combined its Home smart speakers and Nest products under the Google Nest brand last week at Google I/O 2019. The Nest Hub Max, that will launch later this year, would be the first smart speaker by the tech giant to launch under the Google Nest brand. Amid such a scenario, the NBA Finals served as the perfect opportunity for the company to turn non-users into users of Google Home and promote its Google Nest brand at the same time.ALSO READ: | Google Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL go on sale in India: Should you buy itALSO READ: | Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL quick review: Best of Pixel at relatively affordable pricesALSO READ: | Google Pixel 4 image leak suggests a punch hole camera in front
